Katas.
Gestructureerde, herhaalbare verbeterroutines die de bedoeling van organisatieontwerp omzetten in echt gedrag.
KATAS ALS BEGRIP
Een geoefende reeks, geen eenmalige transformatie
Het woord kata komt uit de vechtsporten, waar het een geoefende reeks bewegingen beschrijft om door herhaling vaardigheid en oordeelsvermogen op te bouwen. In management werd het bekend via Toyota: een beproefd, herhaalbaar patroon voor gedisciplineerde verbetering.
De principes van 10X Org bepalen de richting. De katas maken die richting uitvoerbaar. Ze worden toegepast in de Elevate-stap van de MADE-methode, waar inzichten uit mapping, assessment en design concrete verandering worden.
Elke kata richt zich op een concrete beperking, zoals teamgrenzen, beslisrechten, interfaces, beleid of governance, en toetst of het verbreden van mandaten of het verminderen van frictie het systeem dichter bij de beoogde verheven toestand brengt.
Elevating Katas zijn probleemgedreven, niet methodegedreven.

Elevating is een bewuste beweging naar rechts en omhoog op de Org Topologies-kaart (Org Topologies map): bredere skills en bredere werkmandaten, van het leveren van outputs naar het leveren van outcomes.
Een menu, geen volgorde
De katas zijn niet bedoeld om van boven naar beneden toe te passen. Ze vormen een menu van bewuste zetten. Het juiste beginpunt hangt af van waar de beperkingen van een organisatie op de kaart zitten.
Begin klein, breid dan uit
Organisaties beginnen meestal met een paar katas die passen bij hun meest nijpende ontwerpuitdagingen en breiden het gebruik uit of verschuiven het naarmate het leren vordert.
Niet alleen voor software
In dienstverlenende organisaties staat ‘product’ voor een dienstenaanbod, klantreis, zaaktype of operationeel vermogen. Backlogs worden servicewachtrijen; reviews worden serviceinspecties.
KATAS SYSTEMISCH HOUDEN
Vijf manieren waarop katas het hele systeem bewegen
Leiders hebben geen zoveelste transformatieprogramma nodig. Kies een handvol katas en zorg dat ze trouw worden geoefend: als de routines gewoonten worden, groeien wendbaarheid en veerkracht, en volgt de cultuur het werk.
- Heel het systeem
- Een kata past nooit één element los van de rest aan: ze raakt governance, rollen, events, werkwijzen en artefacten tegelijk, zoals het Star Model vraagt.
- Strategie
- Routines zoals Product Backlog Refinement met meerdere teams of verticaal snijden brengen het strategische doel in het dagelijkse werk, zodat structuur en processen de strategie volgen.
- Mensen en rollen
- Katas als Elevate Product Ownership rekken rollen op voorbij hun oude definitie; herhaalde oefening laat de skills groeien die het nieuwe ontwerp nodig heeft.
- Gedrag en cultuur
- Cultuurprogramma’s mislukken op abstracte waarden. Katas veranderen het werkpatroon zelf, en het gewenste gedrag (samenwerking, klantgerichtheid, leren) komt vanzelf mee.
- Beloningen
- Omdat een kata zich herhaalt, sluit ze haar eigen feedbacklus: kortere doorlooptijden, een betere productfit en meer betrokken teams belonen de nieuwe gewoonte.
Katas op het Star Model
Katalog
Katalog groepeert de katas naar de vijf elementen van organisatieontwerp in het Star Model™ van Jay Galbraith. Verander één element en de andere moeten volgen. Elke kata verwijst naar haar beschrijving en naar de casestudies die haar toepassen.

Het Star Model™ van Jay Galbraith leert dat een organisatie niet alleen haar organogram is of de som van haar beleid, maar een systeem van onderling verbonden ontwerpkeuzes die bewust gemaakt en op elkaar afgestemd moeten blijven.
De ster bestaat uit vijf elementen: de ontwerpcriteria die uit de strategie voortkomen, structuur, processen, beloningen en mensen. Als ze op elkaar aansluiten en elkaar versterken, worden prestaties betrouwbaarder en minder toevallig.
Verander er maar één en de rest trekt terug. Een bedrijf dat Scrum als proces-add-on invoert, terwijl werving, beloning en structuur blijven zoals ze waren, krijgt het voorspelbare resultaat: ‘Agile is dood.’ De katas werken op alle vijf elementen, zodat verandering systemisch wordt.
